Heritage Awards
2006 - Second Place, County Heritage Awards
A large group representing the Old Tuam Society travelled to the Claregalway Hotel for the presentation of the annual County Heritage awards by Galway County Council. During the awards ceremony, there was a feeling of great satisfaction and pride when hostess Marie Mannion, County Heritage Officer, announced that the judges had selected the Journal of the Old Tuam Society as winners of second place for the Tuam Electoral Area. The group was presented with a lovely crystal plate to mark the success. Congratulations also to Dr Paul Mohr who won 1st prize in the Tuam Electoral area and Catherine Corless on her award, (both are previous contributor’s to JOTS).

2010 - Overall County Heritage Award Winner

Dr. Tony Claffey has dedicated many years to researching the history of Tuam and in the Summer of 2009 this culminated in the Tuam Atlas, which was launched as No.20 of the prestigious Royal Irish Academy Series of Town Atlas'. This is the first atlas in the series that has been produced for any town west of the Shannon.
This comprehensive work traces the growth of Tuam from its origins as a monastic centre, to its elevation in the 12th century to the status of Cathedral city, through to its development in the 18th century as an important market and trading centre in the west of Ireland. Histories of over 700 sites (streets, markets, schools, etc) are detailed alongside c.20 maps (thematic, reconstruction and historical) and views of the town presented in large format and colour.
It is an outstanding publication and is an excellent example of thorough research that has been excellently presented for us the people of Tuam and County Galway.
