October Lecture -Thomas Henry Burke and the Phoenix Park Murders

The second lecture of the Old Tuam Society's 2011/12 programme will be entitled, Thomas Henry Burke and the Phoenix Park Murders: Murder, Scandal and Intrigue in Victorian Dublin. Thomas Burke was a scion of a prominent Tuam family, as well as Permanent Under Secretary at the Irish Office, Dublin Castle. His assassination, along with Lord Frederick Cavendish, by the Irish National Invincibles on a summer's day in the Phoenix Park was a huge news event of the time. The subsequent trial and execution of Invincibles members, the killing of reviled Invincible traitor James Carey and the Pigott forgeries' false implication of Charles Stewart Parnell's agreement with the killings, all kept the events in the public eye for many years. The lecture will be delivered by Old Tuam Society member Brendan Higgins on Thursday 20th October at 8:30pm at the Mitre Suite, Corralea Court Hotel, Tuam. Admission is free and all are welcome.
